Abstract

This research article undertakes a comparative analysis of two prominent Indian cash transfer programs: the Ladli Behna Yojana (Madhya Pradesh) and the Ladki Bahin Yojana (Maharashtra). Both programs, implemented near state assembly elections, ostensibly aim to empower women from disadvantaged backgrounds through direct cash transfers. Utilizing similar cash transfer mechanisms within comparable socio-cultural and economic environments, the programs raise salient questions regarding their political motivations and long-term sustainability. This study provides a literature review on direct cash transfer (DCT) schemes, examining their efficacy in poverty alleviation and women's empowerment within developing countries. Furthermore, it analyzes the design features, implementation mechanisms, and fiscal challenges associated with each scheme, including a comparative analysis highlighting similarities, differences, and overall impact.
